Five seconds remain. The ball is shoveled into the paint by senior guard Landry Sherrer.
One final shot for the win and senior guard Kennedy Paul maintains possession under the Little Elm basket.
The shot goes up and it goes through as the time expires and Coppell defeats the Lady Lobos 42-41.
Four minutes and 44 seconds on the clock, Little Elm’s Raniyah Hunt from Little Elm makes a steal and increases Little Elm’s lead to 38-34. Sherrer tied up the score 38-38 with about two minutes on the clock. The Lady Lobos aggressively take the ball down the court and make a corner shot with 21 seconds to spare, putting them back in the lead with a score of 41-40.
“What we were trying to do is to get a cross screen action for Landry, and get a weaker defender on Landry, and she’s the main focal point of the whole team,” Coppell assistant Willis Tran said. “We needed to pull Landry to the opposite side because her defenders hugged up on her, and that helped Kennedy go one on one with their post.”
Coppell improves to 1-2 in District 5-6A, while Little Elm falls short 0-3.
The competition is tight and the Lady Lobos are working ahead of the Cowgirls, ultimately bringing the score to 24-20 at halftime.
“I think they were face guarding me a lot of the game and our offense usually runs through me and Kennedy, so I think that we were trying to make sure that I was able to get open to put me and Kennedy in positions to score,” Sherrer said. “They were switching off the screens, and Kennedy was able to roll so I was able to get downhill and kick to shooters, so that was the adjustment we made and it started working.”
During halftime, assistant coach Willis Tran switched up the plays to strengthen the likelihood of increasing the score.
After the third quarter breaks down to the final three minutes, the Lady Lobos call a timeout with the score 33-30. As the pressure increases Paul makes both free throws with 53 seconds left on the clock.
