Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims in which they fast from food, water, and outside influences to practice spiritual discipline. Its origins trace to when the Quran was revealed around 624 A.D. and is practiced globally by Muslims.

In this episode, The Sidekick editorial page editor Aliza Abidi, staff designer Safiya Azam and staff writer Hamza Zakir discuss the origins, trends and speak to Islamic Center of Coppell youth advisor Omar Malik to learn about the integral role community has within Ramadan and Islam.

Aliza Abidi is a senior and the Editorial Page Editor for The Sidekick. In her free time, she likes to read a variety of fiction novels, lift weights, and watch Studio Ghibli movies. Wendy Le
Wendy Le, Executive Social Media Editor
Wendy Le is in her third year in The Sidekick as a senior and the executive social media editor. Throughout her time in this program, she’s found joy in doing things and going to places she never thought she would’ve: standing on the sidelines, in the back of the Black Box Theatre, political rallies, learning how to use Adobe, taking photos, making social media graphics and writing features.  Le does have hobbies outside of D115. When she’s not scouring to get things edited or feeding The Sidekick social media accounts, she likes to brain rot on TikTok, craft new Pinterest boards, go thrifting and take photos on her digital camera. Avani Munji, Executive Design Editor
Avani Munji is a senior and the executive design editor for The Sidekick. Munji joined the program unintentionally, but found that The Sidekick was the perfect place for her to grow as a designer. When she’s not creating a design or trying to learn everything there is to know about Adobe InDesign and Illustrator, you can find her playing various videogames on her Xbox and mourning the loss of her 2008 Wii.
