As the Coppell girls basketball team wrapped up the regular season against Plano, a realization struck the seniors: nothing is certain anymore.
The Cowgirls (23-14) play Allen (25-9) in the Class 6A Region I bi-district playoffs at Lake Dallas High School at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Though the teams have not played this year, this is their third bi-district meeting with the Cowgirls winning both previous games.
However, the Eagles’ district experience against Denton Braswell, Little Elm and Prosper may help them heading into playoffs.
“They are battle-tested,” Coppell coach Ryan Murphy said. “They’ve played in a brutal district and were in it until the very end so that tells you they’ve played in tough games and gone against good competition, so they’ll be ready.”
According to Murphy, the Eagles excel at pushing the ball in transition and mixing up their defense, two aspects Coppell is preparing for. From Allen’s roster, the Cowgirls are preparing for sophomore point guard Simone Richmand, senior small forward Skye Trotter and senior point guard Skye Pepp.
With everything at stake, the Cowgirls remain collected and determined entering the playoffs.
“A lot of times with playoff games, the team that calms down and settles in first gets off to the best start, so we want to prepare to be that team,” Murphy said.
