In district play, the first opponent the Coppell girls basketball team fell to was Flower Mound. Now, with the Jaguars sitting at second and holding the same record, Coppell has a shot at redemption and moving up in district rankings.
The first meeting was Dec. 15 at Flower Mound, the Jaguars defeating Coppell, 64-55. Tonight, the Cowgirls (20-13, 7-3 in District 6-6A) hosts Flower Mound (18-9, 7-3) at 6:15 p.m. at CHS Arena.
“This game is essentially for second place,” Coppell coach Ryan Murphy said. “A win probably guarantees a spot in the playoffs so it’s a really big game for us.”
However, Coppell is repeating the same mentality since falling to Plano East: shifting focus from the outcome of the game to discipline throughout.
From Flower Mound’s roster, Coppell is preparing for junior point guard Maja Bujak and senior shooting guard Kaitlyn Edmonson. However, the Jaguars as a whole, carry a size advantage over Coppell, so the Cowgirls will be focusing on maintaining defensive body positioning.
According to Murphy, in the first meeting with Flower Mound, Coppell did not pressure opposing guards effectively, so this will also be a key focus for the team in tonight’s game.
“You could tell the last win was really big for them,” Murphy said. “None of those girls had ever beaten Coppell before, so they celebrated after that game like they won the championship. I hope our girls remember that when they prepare this week.”
