The clock reads 3:40 remaining in the second quarter, the Coppell girls basketball team leads Flower Mound Marcus by 12. By the time the second quarter ends, the Cowgirls are only two points ahead of the Marauders.
When the teams returned to the court for the second half, the score gap was never closer than three points. Coppell’s lead endured throughout the night. The Cowgirls prevailed, defeating the Marauders 59-45 on Friday night.
“We knew this was going to be a tough game,” Coppell coach Ryan Murphy said. “We didn’t think this was going to be a 20 point game, we thought they were capable of beating us and they were.”
One of Coppell’s primary goals for the game was keeping Marcus senior guards Kennedi Petteway and Alina Martin on the perimeter to limit their drives. The Cowgirls rotated senior guard Atia Medenica and freshman guard Jamyson High-Williams on Petteway, forcing her to left to the rim, limiting her to only scoring nine points throughout the game. As for Martin, Coppell designated senior guard Ella Spiller to guard her the entire game, keeping Martin at eight points for the night and according to Murphy, “taking away her aggressiveness.”
“Once we got some adversity our focus started dropping and we started forcing them, taking bad shots and being loose with the ball,” Murphy said. “It came down to losing focus and not being disciplined.”
Coppell plays Lewisville on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m., as the Cowgirls won the first meeting with the Farmers, 76-5, at CHS Arena.
