On Dec. 7, the CHS9 HOSA chapter held its inaugural family trivia night in the cafeteria.
“We wanted to put more emphasis on family engagement and community service this year,” sponsor Amber Fragosa-Deck. “We decided that a family trivia night would be a good way to do this, as well as include health science knowledge.”
Fifty students and 10 families attended the event. The leadership team divided the trivia into three categories: general knowledge, general medical knowledge and medical education.
Officers sold concessions and held a food drive where families could contribute to the food pantry. For each can of food donated, attendees received a ticket and opportunity to win a door prize in addition to the prize for winning a trivia round.
“I think it was a success,” Fragosa-Deck said. “Although the turnout was small, the attendees had a fun time and families were able to participate in something fun with their students.”
The trivia night has injected a new energy into HOSA. Officers will look to the success of the night when planning future events.
“We opened boundaries with this event,” secretary/treasurer Gia Ajani said. “People got to socialize and the parents are more comfortable with this. I think after this event we got more insight into how people want to volunteer and how people want to do events.”
With the new buzz surrounding HOSA, officers hope the event can become an annual tradition even after their time on campus is over.
“It would be really cool if we made this a tradition because I know that last year for the freshman there wasn’t anything that was pre-planned for us,” historian/reporter Masooma Fatima said. “We really hope that next year the rising freshman can follow in our footsteps.”
