On Tuesday, the Coppell High School football team hosted a blanket drive to benefit the Austin Street Center at Chipotle Mexican Grill on Denton Tap Road.
“I think it is awesome, and it is a great community event,” co-vice president of the Coppell Football Booster Club Scott Woodby said. “Everyone can just come out, bring a blanket and then eat at Chipotle.”
Austin Street Center provides transitional living for those with employment, substance abuse and psychological needs in downtown Dallas. The team wanted to give back to a center that gives so much to others, so they collected new or gently used twin or extra-long twin size blankets for the people at the center.
“We choose Austin Street Center because it is an easy thing for people to do,” co-president of the Coppell Football Booster Club Denise Thompson said. “They distribute these blankets every day so they will always need them and it is easy for the players to participate in.”
Senior tight end Zaid Albarmawi was more than happy to help out. He greeted people at the door, offered to take blankets from any that brought them and explained to people what the entire fundraiser was about so they could help out the cause.
“This blanket drive is really a great cause because it is not just showing how much people support Coppell has for their football program but also shows how much they support their community as a whole by helping those who are less fortunate than us,” Albarmawi said.
