DALLAS – The Majestic Theatre, deep in the heart of downtown Dallas, draws attention with its eye catching, neon sign, proudly bearing its name.
A red carpet leads to the main lobby, where a gaggle of people milled about until the doors opened at 6:30 p.m, and the show started at 8 p.m.
The night opened with a performance by Coppell High School’s own A Capella choir and “American Idol” Season 10 finalist Tim Halperin.
Halperin began the tribute to veterans by singing the national anthem, the “Star Spangled Banner”. The CHS choir joined in for “God Bless America”
After, the A Capella choir performed a medley of patriotic songs, or “Salute to the Armed Forces.” As it sang, the different branches of the military were honored and their flags presented.
Many current and past members of the United States Armed Forces, the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps, the United States Air Force and the United States Coast guard were in attendance.
Setting the patriotic theme of the night, the CHS choir and Halperin sang the “Star Spangled Banner” and “America, the Beautiful” together.
The CHS choir then sang a medley of patriotic tunes as the different branches of the military – the Armed Forces, the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard – were honored, and the flags presented.
All of this led to a premiere of Travis: A Soldier’s Story, a documentary produced by the non-profit Fotolanthropy, a group of photographers and cinematographers who seek inspiring stories to share nationwide.
The documentary tells the story of Travis Mills, a wounded warrior and quadruple amputee. Mills and his family were at the event, as well as many of the families with stories shared by Fotolanthropy.
“I thought it was a great chance for our choir to commemorate the veterans who have served our country, “ junior A Capella choir member Madiha Rehan said. “It was also really cool getting to perform with Tim Halperin.”
