Cowboys declaw Jaguars, 5-0

Despite the cold weather, the Coppell Cowboys soccer team (9-1-1) put on another impressive performance to secure their second win in district play, defeating the Flower Mound Jaguars, 5-0, maintaining their undefeated record at home this season.

“The game was one of our team’s greatest accomplishments this year.” senior Corey Oesch. “Many times a team can play extremely well and still not get the desired result, but our finishing was on point so our performance was able to be accurately reflected on the score board.”

Senior Kellen Reid opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a composed finish from close range.  The Cowboys doubled their lead less than 30 seconds later when senior forward Chris Madden tapped in a loose ball in the six-yard box.

“We did start off playing sloppy offensively,” senior midfielder Nick Price said. “We picked it up quickly and scored two goals.”

After establishing an early lead, the Cowboys continued to move the ball and outplay the Jaguars.

“We stayed focused even after going up,” senior midfielder Jack Burns said. “We didn’t let ourselves get complacent.”

Ten minutes later, the Cowboys managed to find another two goals, after Price out-jumped the Flower Mound defense to head in a lofted free kick from senior Burns, and junior forward Austin Michaelis curled the ball into the far post from the left side of the box moments after.

After the half that saw the Cowboys make 10 substitutions to start the game, replacing almost every player.  Even with none of the original starters on the field, the Cowboys still out-played and out-worked their opponents.

“It’s nice having good depth because over the course of the game people get tired, so its good that we can still play at a really high level when subs come on, ”Burns said.

Ten minutes into the second half, senior midfielder Mitchell Apple put the finishing touches on the win, converting a low cross from junior defender Tommy Miller.

With 11 minutes left in the game, Apple came close to adding another before a goal line clearance from the Flower Mound defense the Cowboys from further expanding their lead.

“One of the keys to our success was the depth our team has,” Oesch said. “After half time 10 out of the 11 players on the field were switched out and we still played great.  It was an awesome experience.”

The Cowboys are now 2-0 in district play after defeating Hebron last week.   Their next game will be this Friday at home when Coppell takes on the Marcus Marauders at 7:30.
