With floors covered in glitter, bows and price tags, it is evident the holiday season is here. On Nov. 16, St. Ann Catholic Parish held its 10th annual Mothers of Young Children (MYC) craft fair.
“The craft fair is held to raise money that supports mothers with young children who might need a little extra money,” craft fair organizer Annie Bell said. “It is a fun event that has a good cause within.”
The craft fair, which sells Christmas decorations, jewelry, candles, hair bows and more, had a great turnout with all vendors leaving happy.
Katherine Hill of Katherine’s Krafts, is a bit different than most vendors. She makes small Christmas trees with ornaments and other small holiday crafts all year long for this one day in November.
“I make crafts all year long to sell and to raise money for the Magi Tree,” Hill said. “At the end of the day I will probably have made between $400 and $800 which I wont keep for myself.”
The Magi Tree is a program St. Ann holds every year. Families or individuals select children, teenagers or adults who cannot afford gifts and purchase presents for them.
“Every year there are people who are not selected or gifts not delivered and the church uses donated money to go out and buy the gifts,” Hill said. “I like knowing I have helped more families than one.”
The vendors are not the only ones who benefit through the fair. Attendees understand the giving feeling and appreciate the fact that it is a good cause.
“One hundred percent of the proceeds are donated and knowing that I helped with that is a great feeling,” craft fair attendee Janis Proctor of Coppell said. “Although this craft fair is smaller than other local ones, it always has a variety of items and friendly faces.”
The jewelry and crafts are not something you see in any mainstream store. These are items that come from the heart.
“I love all the unique crafts and jewelry because all of it is made by some of my church friends,” Proctor said. “For the most part everything is reasonably priced and I can usually find great gifts.”
The 10th annual St. Ann Craft Fair was a success with buyers leaving happy and vendors feeling accomplished, they begin planning for next year.
“Next year will be better than this year and so on, but I will always love selling my crafts here,” Hill said.
