Coppell High School history teacher Joshua Chanin finds himself in a runoff for Place 4 on Lewisville’s City Council.
Chanin received 37 percent of the votes in the May 3 election, while Lonnie E. Tipton received 47 percent, each below the 50 percent majority vote necessary for election. Chanin and Tipton now move to the runoff in June. Carlos Andino received 16 percent of the vote.
“With school winding down, I will have more time to campaign and gather support,” Chanin said. “Now that Andino is not running anymore, I can hopefully gather some of his former supporters’ votes to push me over the top”.
Coppell students have joined Chanin on the campaign trail.
“A lot of people don’t usually vote in city elections, especially during years when presidential elections aren’t occurring,” senior Kyna Shah said. “I think it’s important as students to get involved and campaign because these elections do affect us, even as high school students.”
For Chanin, the campaign continues.
“It’s going to be more stressful, another month of campaigning in the Texas heat,” Chanin said. “But it has definitely put into perspective that everything in life requires hard work. The best person, the one who works the hardest, will win”.
