With the eyes of Cowboy nation watching, Coppell delivered big against a tough McKinney Boyd team. The Cowboys, overcoming multiple penalties and a rash of fumbles, demolished the Broncos, winning 31-6, to take a 2-0 record for the season.
The offense struggled coming out of the gate.
The Cowboys first possession resulted into a turnover on downs and this seemed to set the tone for most of the first half. The next two possessions for the Cowboys resulted in stalled attempts, and they were forced to punt.
The Cowboy defense once again had a dominant performance in tonight’s game. They forced McKinney Boyd to punt in their first two possessions of the night as well.
In the second quarter, Bronco quarterback Curtis Ladd threw a bullet to wide receiver Patrick Ladd for a gain of 43 yards to the Coppell 19 yard line. The Cowboy defense did not back down, forcing a fumble that was recovered by the Broncos and holding them to a field goal attempt that was missed.
Coppell running back Gavin McDaniel then lit a fire underneath the offense.
“It took that one little spark,” Coppell quarterback Colby Mahon said. “I think Gavin (McDaniel) had a big run, and it took off from there.”
Mahon converted three out of four pass attempts to put the Cowboys in the red zone for the first time that game.
The drive was almost flawless. Almost.
Coppell running back Charles West ran for a nine yard gain but proceeded to lose the ball, and McKinney Boyd recovered.
The Broncos could not handle the Cowboys defense and were forced to punt again.
Mahon took over from there.
He delivered two quick strikes, a 19 yard reception by wide receiver Cameron Smith and then a 30 yard pass to wide receiver Jacob Logan to put Coppell up 7-0 over McKinney Boyd.
After half-time, McKinney Boyd’s running back Bryan Driskill exploded for a 50 yard run that put the score 7-6 in Coppell’s favor. The extra point for the Broncos was blocked by the tenacious defense of Coppell.
The offensive line for the Cowboys struggled greatly in the second half, botching three snaps that resulted in major yards lost.
“Just keep practicing, I mean its still week 2,” Biggurs said. “We still need to get to know each other.”
Coppell’s offense, on their next possession, had a beautiful drive that resulted in a McDaniel 22 yard run for a touchdown.
On the kickoff, Driskell was hammered on the return, and he coughed up the ball that was recovered by Coppell.
The Coppell offense capitalized on the turnover kicker Adam Centers booted a 27-yard strike to put the Cowboys up 17-6.
On the ensuing possession for McKinney Boyd, Ladd threw a lofting pass that was intercepted by defensive back Jacob Logan. The issues for the Broncos offense did not stop there.
After Mahon threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Smith, the Coppell defense intercepted new Bronco quarterback Kalvon Howard. This resulted in the last scoring play of the night by the Cowboys with a 32-yard run by Charles West to put Coppell up 31-6 with 6:57 remaining left in the fourth
The McKinney Boyd offense struggled to get anything done all night, especially by Driskell, who was expected to have a big game for the Broncos.
“Our front seven is dominant,” Logan said . “Once again it starts with practice, it’s a mentality that the coaches have put into us.”
