This past year, an interesting new way to learn about and understand difficult issues was introduced in what we call SPUR.
SPUR is a student-run learning system that goes on during fourth period about each month. If you were a student last year, you saw just how helpful SPUR can be, and as many of us saw today, SPUR is getting even better.
This program was introduced as a method of peer bonding within the classroom and outside of school. Because of this bonding goal, the program is mostly student controlled with SPUR program students coming into each class and teaching the lesson for the month. One new addition this year is that students from within that fourth period class get to also help and monitor the lesson to help keep things running smoothly.
This year we will also be focusing on topics differing from last year. As you saw in the video during the SPUR time today, some of the topics will be the same, but handled in a different manner to differentiate from this past year.
SPUR is a unique program to help students work together and get to know each other on a more personal level. As Michael Brock, an AP history teacher, said, “Last year, SPUR was a huge success, and I expect it to be that way this year. It is what you make of it.”
