Receiving a college acceptance letter from your dream school comes with joy and excitement, causing your mind to daydream about your future. To prepare for college life, however, certain tasks must be completed to ensure a successful transition into adulthood.
Money, of course, is the first priority. Opening a bank account provides a foundation for your financial necessities, while allowing you to practice financial freedom. By collecting all your cash and depositing it into a checking account, you can consolidate your savings.
Another task is decluttering your belongings. Prior to heading off to college, you should give away the items you do not need to charities, thrift stores or younger siblings. Having minimal necessities allows you to practice living with a healthy mindset, and encourages you to focus on the future.
You need basic life skills to live independently. Going out of state, in particular, requires knowledge on how to cook, clean, do laundry, pay bills and manage your schedule. To obtain this knowledge, practice cooking dinner once a week, start washing your own clothes and take control of your entire lifestyle without relying on an authoritative figure.
During this time, learn to schedule appointments with healthcare facilities to ensure you are in a healthy position before you leave. Whether it may be ordering enough pairs of contact lenses to last a year, medication for your health or checking up on your injury with a doctor, health preparation should not be ignored.
Now, it is time to pack. Make a list of important documents you need to bring, such as your passport, driver license, health insurance card, social security card and banking information. By having them in close proximity in college, you will be prepared in every situation.
In regards to clothing and everyday items, bring a minimal amount of necessities as a college dorm has limited space. Only pack what you need, and bring the clothes you know you wear on a daily basis. Do not forget various items such as an umbrella, a charger, a reusable water bottle and disinfectant wipes.
Prior to leaving, spend time with your family and friends. You may not be able to see them on a regular basis, so prioritize making memories to spend every last second with the people you cherish.
With the remaining time you have, do everything and anything you have always wanted to do. Watch those TV shows, make tiramisu, explore new places and find a new fashion style. Enjoy the short time you have before your busy schedule in college, and allow yourself to have fun.
Lastly, create goals for your future self. Setting goals inspires you to achieve your aspirations and passions, and encourages you to work hard towards them. College life may be difficult to adjust to, but having the right mindset provides you with a foundation to succeed.
Although the transition from high school to college can be daunting, being well prepared allows you to navigate your future with confidence.
