“Touch grass.”
I often hear these words thrown around as a joke, never taken seriously despite the meaningful advice that they hold. In an era of advanced technology and transportation, we sometimes forget the magic of being outside.
Spending time outside isn’t simply relaxing, it has health benefits as well. According to UCLA Health, walking outside strengthens immune system function, improves heart health and reduces stress. Working this into your schedule requires a nearby park that allows you to immerse yourself in nature on a regular basis. Here are five nearby parks and trails that can serve that purpose.
Andrew Brown Park
Located near Coppell High School, Andrew Brown Park is split into three sections: West, East and Central. Many Coppell High School athletic events take place there due to its proximity to the campus.
Due to its large land area, this park can accommodate many people without feeling too crowded. There are many things to do in Andrew Brown Park, including walking, biking, fishing and sports. It is a great place to enjoy nature with friends and family due to its diversity of amenities and large size. However, it’s possible that the park could get busy due to its convenience for those living in Coppell and its popularity.
Duck Pond Park
Unlike other parks, Duck Pond Park is located within a neighborhood in Coppell. Its primary attraction is the duck pond for which it was named.
It is a nice, family friendly location that younger kids enjoy due to the animals that call the duck pond home. It offers a more quiet, peaceful connection to nature than other parks. It would be a nice place to spend time and immerse yourself in the wildlife of Coppell. Since it is a smaller park, however, it can accommodate less people.
Campion Trail
Campion Trail is located in Irving, and serves as a nearby escape to nature for people who live outside of the city of Coppell.
It is known for its well maintained trails and scenic views and is home to a multitude of wildlife you wouldn’t normally find in your backyard, such as snakes, ducks and armadillos. However, it is still located within the city, so it’s surrounded by homes and may not provide the complete seclusion that some people may prioritize.
Oak Grove Park
Located in Grapevine, Oak Grove Park is a nice place to spend mornings and evenings, due to its serene lake views of the sunrise and sunset.
It is adjacent to Grapevine Lake, making it a great place for fishing as well. For those looking for a nature retreat by a large lake, this park is the perfect place. In addition, it has other amenities such as sports fields and picnic tables. However, it is located farther away from Coppell, making the drive there very long.
The Sound Trail
The walking trails of The Sound still provide an ample disconnection from everyday stressors, despite their location in an urban setting.
It is a newer trail known for its location along North Lake and stunning sculptures alongside its path. While the trail does start within The Sound, traveling along the trail brings you farther from the urban setting, and even closer to the nature surrounding North Lake. However, the main loop of the trail might be crowded due to its convenience for many who live in and around The Sound.
Spending time in a park doesn’t need to take too much time, nor does it require strenuous physical exercise. Every minute spent in nature is a minute less of stress and anxiety. It is time to unplug your stressors, and reconnect with nature.
Seriously, go touch grass.
