The clock counts down from 10 and people cheer to watch the numbers on their phone change, the ball drop in Times Square and the earth to finally make yet another full cycle around the sun. The start of this new year comes with a fresh new start to make a personal change.
“New Year’s resolutions could be a clear way to show yourself what you actually want to accomplish, like learning a new skill, accomplishing a goal, getting a house or getting a job you really want,” Coppell High School sophomore Pooja Jayanth said.
However, working towards these goals takes time and hard work.
“People do give up on their New Year’s resolutions because some people might think it might be way too different from who they are actually,” Jayanth said. “They will just stop doing it.”
However, New Year’s resolutions are not impossible to achieve. While it does take effort, focus and passion, people can become who they want to be in the new year.
“One of my main goals is learning how to manage my timer better and stay consistent without stressing myself too much,” sophomore Joshitha Nuthanki said. “I also really want to grow in music, improving my singing and violin, performing more, being more confident and putting myself out there.”
Of course, following through these objectives are definitely not easy, as it will not just happen overnight. For example, if a person who is not used to reading sets a goal of reading an entire book series this year, then they would have to get used to reading at least everyday for that goal to be met.
This is why goals cannot be achieved without at least a little bit of effort. Effort is a major part of working towards your New Year’s resolutions, and there is a high amount of people who quit their New Year’s resolutions just days after setting them due to a lack of effort.
“I want to stick to my new resolution by setting goals for myself,” sophomore Rivanna Joshi said. “I don’t think it would be personally easy for me to follow, because I am known for not really sticking to things and giving up halfway.”
Small goals acting as stepping stones for your New Year’s resolution really help with achieving it efficiently, but your mindset is what truly makes it happen.
”It’s just the encouragement and passion you have that will help you,” Jayanth said. “You could write it down in a journal or maybe put it up on the wall.”
Even if achieving your dreams is not easy, it is not impossible if you put your mind to it and believe that you can reach it.
“If you think about it everyday, it will help you get somewhere to your goal,” Jayanth said.
