Last Tuesday, students at New Tech High @ Coppell showcased their creativity, passion and compassion at the 11th annual poetry event, Slamming for a Cause. The event featured freshman from the Rookie Learners class, who engage in Project-Based Learning.

The performances gave the audience a different perspective on issues such as trial equality and education. Freshmen had performances revolving around a range of world issues, from issues of war to threats to our environment.
The event commenced with welcome messages by New Tech Principal Zane Porter, Puddin’ Pop founder Austin Anderson and emcees of the event.
In addition to Slamming for a Cause, the event introduced the Poetry Out Loud finalists and winner, senior Jimin Park, who advanced to compete at the state-level and won a scholarship.

This event expanded beyond poetry. Students competed and performed with heartfelt speeches for their parents and peers. Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in a silent auction, look through student-designed T-shirts and enjoy treats at the bake sale. Proceeds from the event went to local nonprofit Puddin’ Pop that provides custom clothing, packages, books, blankets and backpacks to children in foster care.
