The Coppell Smart City Board met on Monday to review citywide sustainability initiatives, including smart water management programs, satellite leak detection systems and residential energy backup solutions.
Board member Deepak Jayavant presented a four-phase roadmap for the Smart and Integrated Water Conservation Plan, which includes introducing smart irrigation controllers, modern rainwater harvesting techniques and greywater recycling systems through 2029.
Jayavant emphasized that Texas law allows homeowners to install rainwater harvesting systems and proposed partnerships with Rachio, a company producing smart irrigation controllers.
Board member Michael Cash suggested exploring additional options such as rain or soil sensors, emphasizing that Coppell should look at multiple solutions.
“We are already behind compared to other cities,” Cash said. “Rachio is not the only solution out there.”
The discussion also included smart leak detection technologies such as ASTERRA, a satellite-based system used by cities such as New Braunfels, Comal and Midland to identify underground leaks and conserve water.
“Early leak detection helps reduce water waste and operational costs while improving sustainability,” board member Lucia Rushton said
In addition to smart leak detection technologies, board member Joseph Hewitt, who introduced Base Power Company’s home battery backup system, designed to provide residents with affordable backup energy during outages and peak demand.
“The more residences that adopt this system, the stronger and more resilient the grid becomes for everyone,” Hewitt said. “Weather events, like the freeze, may have a lower overall impact, and residents can have confidence in uninterrupted service while potentially lowering electricity costs.”
The meeting concluded with an open discussion about potential next steps for Coppell’s smart infrastructure plan, including expanding public awareness for sustainability campaigns and exploring new partnerships to support the city’s sustainability goals.
