On Monday, Coppell ISD Board of Trustees announced Doug Williams as interim Superintendent effective June 1.
Until the role of the superintendent has been determined by the CISD Board of Trustees, Williams will take over the responsibility as the provisional superintendent.
Williams has more than 30 years of experience in public education, beginning his career in 1997. He spent the first 12 years of his career as a social studies teacher and football coach at Fannindel, Leonard and Winnsboro High Schools. He later shifted to school administration in 1999.
“When I was in college I thought I might go into public policy and try to become a congressman or senator,” Williams said. “My calling was really just continuing to work with students and that’s why I went into education.”
Sunnyvale ISD went from kindergarten through eighth grade. Williams’ job as superintendent consisted of creating a high school, culminating in the first graduating class in 2001.
As Williams advanced in his career, he joined the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) in 2012, which became a gateway for opportunities. Former CISD superintendent, Dr. Jeffery Turner, invited Williams in recognition of his passion for public education.
“Turner was one of the people I spent a lot of time with, and I got to know Coppell through him,” Williams said. “I think that bond was an important connection.”
TASA changed Williams’s outlook on education and academics. He believes students should not just be defined by grades, rather by an overview of their passions, interests and personality.
“Students shouldn’t just be measured by their performance on STAAR, there are a lot of other things that are important,” Williams said.
As interim superintendent, Williams aspires to listen and communicate effectively within the district and community.
“It’s important that the board and I have a clear understanding of their objectives,” Williams said. “I would love to have sessions where I have an opportunity to visit with faculty members, campus leadership, and eventually I would love the opportunity to visit Hunt’s student advisory group.”
As Williams steps into the role of interim superintendent, he strives to deliver a concrete foundation for the incoming full-time superintendent.
“I want everyone to know that we’re going to make every attempt to really set good priorities about what we as a district want to accomplish,” Williams said.
