On Tuesday, city council member Don Carroll was appointed as Coppell’s new mayor pro tem, succeeding previous mayor pro tem Kevin Nevills.

“Carrol’s steady leadership, thoughtful approach and dedication to Coppell make him an outstanding choice for this role,” Nevills said. “When I look at our council, the most qualified person and the longest serving member who has not yet had the opportunity to serve as mayor pro tem is Carroll”

Mayor Wes Mays declared May 13 as Coppell Cowgirls Golf Day, celebrating the Coppell High School Girls Golf Team for winning the 2025 UIL Class 6A State Championship, the first in the school’s history. Junior Alicia Bellendir claimed individual title earning All State honor.

Mays expressed his appreciation and respect for the team’s talent, perseverance, and sportsmanship.

“This team’s remarkable performance and deep bond reflects the values of commitment, teamwork, and pride that define Coppell ISD and the Coppell community,” Mays said.

Players autographed a commemorative pin flag and golf ball for the city’s trophy case, and participated in a putting challenge.

The council proclaimed May 18-24 as Emergency Medical Services Week, honoring the Coppell Fire Department’s dual trained firefighter paramedics.

“These men and women are often the first face someone sees on the worst day of their lives,” Carroll said. “Their compassion and professionalism define our culture of service.”

Following the proclamations, Mays also recognized May as National Water Safety Month, applauding the city’s recreation partners and emphasizing public education efforts to prevent drowning and promote aquatic safety.

The council adopted the 2025 Community Experiences Master Plan, which outlines goals for more inclusive programming and future park development. However, no design funding was allocated for the restoration of Andrew Brown East Park Pond.

Magnolia Park Trail construction has progressed with the installation of upper gabion baskets.

Fire Station No. 5 is nearing completion, with landscaping and interior finishes underway and vertical construction is expected to begin soon.

Additional updates included continued DART punch list work at Belt Line Road bridge over Interstate 635, pending installation of signal poles at the Freeport intersection, and the start of work at Veterans Plaza following silt fence installation.
