“Last year we weren’t killers,” Coppell girls golf coach Gary Beyer said. “This year, the girls are playing like killers.”
In the Class 6A Region I championship, the Coppell girls golf team took gold with a two-day team score of 600, 15 strokes better than second place Prosper.
“Focusing on regionals was the first goal,” Beyer said. “However, in totality, we know what we are playing for, and we want to win as we have done all year.”
With the first day featuring a five-player score of 301, and the second day at 299, Beyer was pleased with the performance. However, he expects more for the state championship on Monday and Tuesday at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown.
“We played how I expected we would,” Beyer said. “We had a minimal amount of bad holes, and when they happened, I told them to forget about it and move on.”
Losing in the fourth round of a knockout against Prosper sophomore Tatum Churchman, Coppell junior Alicia Bellendir placed second in the tournament.
“The girls were ready to spray Alicia with water and celebrate,” Beyer said. “After a 30-foot putt went in, they were devastated. That tells you more about the team and their companionship.”
Having a target on its back since the beginning of the season, the No. 1 team in the state has 36 more holes to prove why it is the best.
“Being the best team in the state, everyone wants to see us fail,” Beyer said. “No rearview mirrors.”
