After a scoreless three innings for both teams, Flower Mound sophomore first baseman Cooper Skinner smashes the ball far out to left field. As the ball evades diving Coppell outfielders, Flower Mound junior outfielder Roman Stevens sprints to score the first run of the night.
From there, the stream of runs continued for the Jaguars, and the Cowboys lost, 5-0, at Coppell ISD Baseball/Softball Complex on Thursday.
Flower Mound’s dominance largely came from junior pitcher Cooper Harris.
”They were really good on the mound, and we’re not as strong at hitting,” Coppell coach Armando Garza said.
Looking to change the momentum of the game, junior pitcher Aaron Malick entered in relief during the sixth inning. Malick was able to strike out three Jaguars while pitching in the sixth and seventh inning. However, Flower Mound’s batters continued to clear the ball into the outfield and they scored three more runs.
“[Garza] told us to keep our heads high and to not give up at all, and for the most part we did,” junior infielder Mason Trichel said. “We just couldn’t execute.”
Garza wants the team to maintain consistent principles of play. Rather than changing its style for each different opponent, he wants to build on the team’s weaknesses to make them stronger against any opponent.
”We’re including different types of hitting stuff,” Garza said. “We’re going to work on a lot of the same, but with a different mentality of the play.”
