Students in lab coats conduct research, collect data and write complex abstracts utilizing the scientific process.
On Jan. 23, Coppell High School hosted its annual Science Fair with 45 teams presenting projects to community judges. Participants had to conduct background research on their topic, gain approval from various committees for their ideas, generate a unique question, plan procedures for an experiment, collect data and analyze conclusions.
The result that students present included an abstract, report and tri board that judges gauged using a rubric.
Twenty-one awards were given across various topic areas. Sophomore Ishita Sharma placed second in the Robotics and Machine Learning category. Her project (called “Smart Scheduling”) uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to predict how long a patient would have to wait at a doctor’s office.

“I wasn’t in it for the award. I was in it to learn because I really love experimenting with how new algorithms are emerging, along with how you can actually implement them,” Sharma said.
Junior Haya Ansari, along with her teammates Asmi Sakroo and Yuga Maddalagi, place third in the Environmental Engineering, Energy and Physics/Astronomy category through a project that analyzes NASA data on atmospheric spectra to determine facts about stars/planets.
“The fair had been my friend and team leader Yuga’s dream since middle school, and she made it to regionals this year with us,” Ansari said.
CHS students work with CHS science teacher Holly Anderson, while CHS9 students work with science teacher Laronna Doggett at the ninth grade campus. Together, they help facilitate the process as educators and mentors.
“If anyone’s interested in science, this is a great opportunity to learn the scientific process,” Anderson said. “Even if you’re not passionate about the science fair and winning prizes through competition, just the process is a valuable experience.”
Out of the 45 teams that participated in the CHS Science Fair, 29 are planning on presenting at the Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday. To prepare for interviews and gain feedback, all of the projects from the Science Fair will be presented in the CHS Commons on Wednesday, as the community is welcome to tour projects.
