Coppell senior quarterback Edward Griffin stands tall in the pocket. As the play develops, senior wide receiver Harry Hassmann breaks free using every bit of his speed.
Griffin hits Hassmann in stride for 45 yards and the score. That would do it for the starters as they got pulled en route to a 47-28 win over Flower Mound Marcus for the Coppell football team on Thursday at Buddy Echols Field.
With this, the Cowboys (10-0 overall, 7-0 in District 5-6A) made history as it is the first time in program history it has gone undefeated in back-to-back regular seasons.
Coppell hosts Prosper in the Class 6A Division II Region I bi-district playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday at Buddy Echols Field.
“I told the guys the other day that we have a chance to go make history,” Griffin said. “The team executed in every aspect today and now that we have done this we have to be ready for the next step.”
With playoffs on their mind, Coppell coach Antonio Wiley said the Cowboys needed to not to take Marcus lightly.
“Marcus is on their way up,” Wiley said. “We didn’t expect them to give up their shot at a playoff game without a fight and they fought until the end.”
On the Marcus side, it knew that it needed to be near perfect to beat Coppell, and it was not enough eliminating the Marauders from playoff contention.
“We were expecting a supremely talented team in Coppell,” Marcus coach Mike Alexander said. “It is the end of the season for us but I was extremely impressed with our guys this year, and we will come back better next year.”
The district champions are already looking forward to opening the playoffs at home against the Eagles.
“We ain’t done yet,” Wiley said. “We have a good ball team coming here next week and we are going to have to work harder than ever for a shot at playing in that 16th game.”
