The City of Coppell held a joint board meeting for the members of Planning & Zoning, F.O.A.R.D. Task Force, and Smart City Board on Oct. 24 to discuss the importance of focusing on student safety in the current day, and updated senior living plans for the future.
To continue the trend the city has had throughout the years, the Smart City Board is making plans for the city’s children and adults to thrive.
Committee youth advisor Reyna Dalme said the board plans to make pedestrian areas around Coppell High School will be improved for better student safety.
”We’re kind of working on implementing longer crosswalk times, because a lot of people travel through there and there’s a lot of traffic,” Dalme said. “Even if we started near the high school, I think especially kids who walk to the elementary of middle schools could be implemented there as well.”
Planning and Zoning Commission chair Edmund Haas mentioned the board’s ongoing comprehensive plan to further improve Coppell living.
“We’re an aging community,” Haas said. “I think that’s going to be a key issue to how that gets addressed. I turned 60. I want to stay in Coppell long term, but I get that there’s a finite amount of land.”
Economic Development coordinator Mindi Hurley said senior living will continue to evolve throughout the years following the city’s plans to implement the 2040 plan.
“One of the things that was established in 2030 was that we wanted to be a community for a lifetime,” Hurley said. “If you drive around Coppell you can see that we have a lot of large homes. Most people don’t necessarily want to take care of large homes anymore. Another thing though is what we will be looking forward to in the future is what we do to help encourage young families to come back into the community.”
