Top of the sixth. The Coppell baseball team and Flower Mound Marcus are battling it out and momentum is fully with the Cowboys. Up four runs, Coppell is looking to capitalize and put the game away.
“You know, we were doing a lot of things right,” Coppell coach Armando Garza said. “We were sticking to the original gameplan of controlling the game and making as few mistakes as possible.”
Then it all changed. A line drive, then a double, then an RBI single. And just like that Coppell was in trouble. Two hits later, the bases are loaded and momentum has completely shifted. A 2 RBI single, bunt, and steal home ensued as Marcus took the lead to end the top of the sixth inning and went on to defeat the Cowboys, 7-4, on Friday at Coppell ISD Baseball/Softball Complex.
“Games sometimes just don’t go your way and they get away from you,” Coppell senior catcher Lucas Frederick said. “We showed grit and tried our hardest to stop the bleeding, and that’s just a tough one to lose.”
Coppell could not regain the momentum.
“This was definitely a hard one for us,” Frederick said. “We are still confident in our abilities and we know we have what it takes to compete with anyone.”
After a stagnant first inning, Coppell took charge lighting up the scoreboard with senior Brandon Beene stealing home in the second inning, a line drive to center field bringing a run in by junior Joaquin Oaxaca in the third inning, a double bringing senior Noah Hoenig to home plate in the fourth inning, and a successful bunt by sophomore Cain Frosk in the fifth inning to bring home a runner.
Coppell bounced back with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday against Plano.
“Baseball is definitely a hard sport,” Garza said. “We are going to take practice heavily and try to fix up the mistakes for next week.”
