After residing at third place in District 6-6A for the majority of the season, the Coppell girls basketball team (21-13, 8-3 in District 6-6A) moved up to second with its victory against Flower Mound (18-10, 7-4).
On Friday, the Cowgirls defeated the Jaguars, 63-44, at CHS Arena.
Throughout its season, Coppell has been focusing on better rebounds and finishing shots at the rim, all of which were achieved in last night’s game.
“It’s been a long tough season and we’re starting to finally get some consistency,” Coppell coach Ryan Murphy said. “This has been probably the five game stretch where we’ve been the most consistent all year long so that’s exciting.”
Coppell senior guard Ella Spiller scored the first bucket of the night 12 seconds into the game and the Cowgirls lead never faltered.
In the first quarter, Coppell built a 17-8 lead by the end of the quarter.
Halfway into the second quarter, Flower Mound junior guard Addison Gray launched a full court pass to teammate senior forward Kaitlyn Edmonson. Edmonson drove as three Cowgirls closed in to defend, but she scores a layup and reduces Coppell’s lead to four.
Coming out of halftime, the Cowgirls led 29-23 and extended the lead to 43-35 after three.
Now with a five-game winning streak, the Cowgirls keep their eyes on the horizon for their next game.
Coppell hosts Hebron on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. for Senior Night and its final home game of the regular season.
