On Tuesday, the Coppell girls basketball team defeated Frisco Memorial, 58-42.
In the first quarter, the team was off to a slow start. The game looked unfavorable for Coppell when the team called a timeout just minutes into the game. The Cowgirls pushed through, and by halftime, the team led by 11 points.
Coppell coach Ryan Murphy said senior forward Berlynn Engelhardt, junior guard Sarah Mirza, senior guard Atia Medenica and senior guard Mia Trillo played great games.
“Berlynn, Sarah and Mia kind of really stand out as people that kind of gave us some energy and then in the second quarter we played really well,” Murphy said. “I thought Atia had a huge night for us. She was really difficult for them and they really couldn’t stop her. She made great decisions whether to attack or kick it out.”
The Cowgirls maintained their lead throughout the game, making skillful shots and stops in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Coppell moved quickly with the ball and blocked out the Warriors’ shots to secure the win.
“As a team, we played pretty good because we were able to move the ball around for a lot and we really played together as a team,” Coppell junior Maizen Gillam said. “We did a lot more preparation on working together and a lot more trying to find other people’s shots rather than just our own.”
One particular standout player was junior Landry Sherrer, who made exceptional shots against the Warriors’ defense.
“I started out really sped up, but then settled into the game, so that was good,” Sherrer said. “We moved the ball really well, it wasn’t dying in anybody’s hands and we were making shots, so I think it was good. I think we’ve built some really solid practices.”
According to Murphy, the Cowgirls had one of their best games yet this year.
“That second quarter to about halfway through the fourth, I thought that’s one of the best we’ve played this year,” Murphy said. “It was really fun to watch five girls share the basketball and work together to get the best shot for us instead of for themselves.”
