Senior day: Cowboys finish in a tie against JJ Pearce
On Saturday at the Coppell ISD Baseball/Softball Complex, the Coppell baseball team tied against Richardson Pearce 8-8 in non-district play. The Cowboys team hosted Pearce for their Senior Day match which consisted of only seniors throughout the innings. With fast-paced scores tallying up for both teams, the game ended in seven innings in a tie.
“We had a couple of mistakes throughout the game that hurt us but those things are easy to clean up and we will get it done when we practice,” Coppell senior third baseman Walker Polk said. “As a team, we pitched well except for a couple of hits, and other than the little errors that we had, we played well. It just did not work out today.”
In the top of the first inning, Pearce began by scoring with a two-run fly ball to left field by batter Chris Courrege followed by another run to right field by batter Stefan Stahl.
Coppell started strong as well, as Polk and batter Landry Fee scored consecutive runs after infielder Noah Wafford’s hard ground ball to right field.
Coppell took the lead in the bottom of the second inning as Polk singled on a line drive to left fielder Dean Balo, scoring outfielder Ryan Fields. Coppell cut the Peace lead to 4-3 with a run by left fielder Charles Barker.
The game became intense in the fourth inning as Pearce did not score any runs. Coppell took advantage of this and scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning by batter Shota Kakiuchi, a triple and a run scored by catcher Tate Hancock and Polk. This increased the Cowboys’ lead to 7-3.
In the top of the fifth, Pearce responded with a home run by Garrett Schroeder, followed by runs from both Balo and Trent Williams resulting in a score of four runs. The game was tied at 7 after five.
In the bottom of the sixth, Coppell scored a run by batter Will Boylan after he ran a double and two singles following a hit from third baseman Francisco Guerrero.
In the top of the seventh and final inning, Courrege hit a home run while in the bottom of the seventh, Coppell was scoreless.
“This game I feel like we played hard and took advantage of our opportunities. I would like to get a hit with the runners and scoring positions and make better plays defensively,” Coppell coach Ryan Howard said.
