At last night’s Coppell City Council meeting, the council approved an ordinance for the readopting, ratifying, republishing and extending of the curfew hours for minors chapter of the Code of Ordinances for another three years.

Texas local government code 370.002 requires that the city council re-adopt, modify, or abolish a curfew ordinance every three years.

At the meeting, Coppell Police Chief Danny Barton provided a report presenting the curfew hours for minors plan to the council. According to Barton, over the last three years, there were six arrests from midnight to 6 a.m. with four in 2019, two in 2020, and zero in 2021.

“I feel like this ordinance is a common sense ordinance,” Barton said. “It keeps our minors safe. I was working the streets prior to 2000 and we really wanted a curfew ordinance. This is a very effective ordinance because we don’t come across that many minors after midnight.”

In addition to hearing Barton’s proposal of ratifying the curfew hours for minors, the council approved a proclamation celebrating February as Black History Month.

The council also ratified the repeal of the Code of Conduct in its entirety. According to Coppell city attorney Robert E. Hager, the new code should take six to eight weeks to create, be brought to the work session on March 22 and should be presented to the council on April 5 for voting.

The meeting ended with Coppell City Mayor Wes Mays announcing a memorial service for Caitlin Rogers at the Coppell Arts Center at 5 p.m and attendees will then walk to George Coffee + Provisions.
