The new players and new turf marked the first home game of the season. The latter was the cause of worry, at least at first.

“We were all kind of nervous because we got turf on our field, so this was our first time playing on the new field,” Coppell sophomore pitcher Maddi Sigman. “So, we wanted to do well. But, once we started, I think everyone was having a good time and played well.”

Despite the turf, players were quick to adapt, resulting in the team’s 8-4 victory against Frisco Wakeland on Tuesday night at the Coppell ISD Baseball/Softball Complex.

Wakeland scored the first run of the night at the top of the first inning. However, Coppell was quick to recover and two runs were scored by the second inning.

At the bottom of the second, Coppell senior pitcher Kat Miller tripled and shortstop Lorien Zimmerman was able to score after right fielder Hannah Gullatt singled. Coppell scored again in the third inning on a pitching error from Wakeland.

Though Wakeland scored the first run, it was only able to score again in the seventh inning. Coppell, meanwhile, scored an additional two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.

It was ultimately the early lead Coppell got that gave it an advantage. Wakeland scored three runs in the seventh inning, a potentially fatality for Coppell if not for their score early on.

“I think everyone did really well, and everyone had good energy the whole time,” Sigman said. “And we won, so that was really cool.”

Coppell softball plays in a tournament at College Station starting Tuesday, Mar. 8.

“I am so excited,” Miller said. “We definitely have a good group of girls this year, and our energy has been fantastic in practice. And we’re going to show up at the games this year and show out.”
