The Coppell girls soccer team faces Mansfield on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Buddy Echols Field for its first scrimmage of the season.

With a combination of team and individual practices, the Cowgirls have put their focus on individual set pieces after coming off an unconventional last season.

“[The] drills that we’ve been doing for left forwards are really just attacking one-on-one and learning how to shake their defense,” Coppell senior left forward Jojo Alonzo said. “Our job is to help shake our defenders to win the ball.”

Prior to the start of the season, the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches (TASCO) recognized the team as sixth in the Class 6A Region I rankings. To Alonzo, what is unique about the Cowgirls is the chemistry they are bringing to this new season.

“One of our strengths is just connecting as a group,” Alonzo said. “Our offense is very good, and the chemistry there is something that’s not matched by other schools. I would say our weaknesses are winning 50-50 balls, because we just don’t challenge as much, and also our defensive end. I’m looking forward to being back on the field again and playing under the lights.”
