Previously working as a teacher, Coppell Middle School North Principal Dr. Greg Axelson will assume the role of Coppell ISD Chief Operations Officer. Announced on May 1, Axelson will be taking over COO from retired CISD Associate Superintendent Sid Grant.

“I learned of the opening when it was announced that our Associate Superintendent, Mr. Sid Grant, was retiring last fall,” Axelson said via email. “I have a background in logistics management prior to becoming a teacher and was drawn to the idea of combining my experiences in education and operations in this unique position.”

Axelson will officially start as COO on June 1 after finishing the remaining semester as principal at CMSN.

“I will miss CMS North very, very much. I will miss the teachers, staff, parents and of course, our students,” Axelson said. “I will miss seeing them everyday and the impact we are having on their lives firsthand.”

The role of COO covers multiple departments such as child nutrition, technology, student bus transportation, maintenance, grounds keeping, custodial services, bond construction projects, legal contracts, property and liability insurance and bond election planning.

“Given his vast experience not only as a teacher but as a campus administrator, he will be able to fully understand the operational needs of the campuses from an educator’s perspective,” Grant said via email. “He will bring people together within his departments to do amazing things for our students, staff and community.”

CISD posted the CMS North principal position on April 28 and is looking for a new principal.

“My advice to [the new principal] would be to love and nurture the staff and listen to the students,” Axelson said. “[The students] are brilliant, creative and full of terrific ideas.”

Despite the many roles and responsibilities of COO, Axelson remains excited for the job opportunity.

“It is a great honor to take on this new role,” Axelson said. “As a community member, parent and staff member, I am very excited to continue to serve this district.”
