The Coppell girls lacrosse team plays Allen tonight at 7 p.m. at Coppell Middle School North for the third game of the season.

After beginning the season with a loss to defending state champion Southlake, 15-0, the Cowgirls are hoping to cultivate a winning streak following their 18-7 win against Grapevine last Thursday.

As the season has just begun, this game is not imperative for the results of the rest of the season because it is not a playoff game; however, the team is preparing with the same mentality.

“The team is preparing for the game by going through plays and mentally relaxing,” Coppell sophomore attacker Haley Wenzel said. “Personally, I prepare for games by eating the best I can, hydrating and trying not to worry.”

Although the team was successful against Grapevine last Thursday,  the team is analyzing mistakes made against Southlake in preparation for Allen. The team anticipates tough competition from Allen and is preparing both its offense and defense in order to perform at their strongest.

“As a team, it’s imperative that we work on making quick ball movement and improve on ball handling in order to get the upper hand against Allen,” Wenzel said.

Entering this season, the Cowgirls biggest goal is making it to state. Last year, Coppell did not qualify for playoffs after ending the season with a 0-5 record and is hoping to make a comeback this season.

“We have greatly improved as a team since last season,” Wenzel said. “Now the focus is on gaining confidence and going to state.”
