Starting next fall, Coppell ISD athletics will say goodbye to Irving ISD and hello to Plano ISD in district competition.

Today, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) announced the new districts realignment for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons. A majority of Coppell High School programs, including football, basketball and volleyball, will compete in District 6-6A with Flower Mound, Flower Mound Marcus, Lewisville Hebron, Lewisville, Plano West, Plano East and Plano.

“I’m looking forward to the new people,” CHS junior wrestler Joel Hernandez said. “It’s going to be a little tough – definitely something we’ll have to get used to. This district is supposed to be one of the hardest districts in the state.”

Although the Cowboys and Cowgirls are competing in the same district as the previous two seasons, new opponents including Plano, Plano East and Plano West bring a new form of competition into Coppell’s athletics program.

“It’s a little bit harder as far as district and area goes, but we’re up for it,” CHS girls cross country and track coach Nick Benton said. “Anytime you can get more competition, usually the ones that are willing to up their game. That’s what we’re hoping to do – make [the athletics program] stronger.”
