Cowboys facing former assistant coach in scrimmage with Heritage
December 16, 2019
Coming off an exciting victory against 2018-19 Class 5A state runner-up Frisco Wakeland last Thursday, the Cowboys meet Frisco Heritage for another scrimmage tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Buddy Echols Field.
The last match saw a great performance from the Cowboys, along with an ending that left the crowd on the edge of its seats. However, it had a somewhat shaky chemistry with the relatively new roster, with numerous underclassmen taking up important positions on the field. However, with 80 more minutes of experience on their back, the Cowboys are looking to patch up weaknesses, such as any chinks in their defense and finishing better.
“Our team has a lot of new faces,” Coppell senior forward Tom Vazhekatt said. “Our priority right now is to see what works and what doesn’t with the talent we have. We are planning on building our team chemistry through these preseason scrimmages and also hope to improve tactically.”
Frisco Heritage is also a talented team, advancing all the way to the Class 5A Region II semifinals last season, before losing, 3-2, against Mount Pleasant.
This year, Frisco Heritage has David Blackburn as its head coach, who was a Coppell assistant boys soccer coach since 2015 and left for the head position at the end of last season. Most seniors on the team, like Vazhekatt, had been coached by Blackburn since their freshmen year and have spent countless hours training under him. Now, they look forward to the reunion.
“I expect this game to be good, especially considering it is Coach Blackburn’s team,” Vazhekatt said. “Our main objective, more than winning, is mostly to see where we are both physically and tactically.”
