A small group of Coppell High School students ranging from sophomores to seniors prove it really is all about the love of the game. The Hoops League, introduced this year by junior Ben Osiecki, is an off season basketball team which plays weekly games against other schools for fun.
“It is just a bunch of guys who like to play coming together,” Osiecki said. “It is not really about being good or winning. It is just about playing and having fun.”
Osiecki followed the lead of former CHS students 2009 graduates David Rexroat and Austin Fink in starting the league. Rexroat and Fink started a similar team last year and Osiecki liked the idea.
“I have known [CHS boys basketball coach Brad Chasteen] my whole life,” Osiecki said. “He doesn’t coach the team, but he was nice enough to give me the OK to start the Hoops League. Technically, I am the coach of the team, but I get to play with the guys too.”
Most of the players on the team are former CHS basketball players who quit for various reasons such as other sports obligations.
“One of my friends told me about the league,” senior Mac Vu said. “I quit playing basketball for the school a while ago and was looking for a place to play. I still love the game and this gives me the opportunity to still play for fun.”
Even though the team has not had much success in their recent games, the players say it is more about fun than the competition. The Hoops League plays teams from other schools ranging from varsity to recreational levels.
Osiecki even admits the Hoops League has not had a single practice and doesn’t plan too. The team merely meets before games and plays to the best of their ability.
“If we start getting beat really badly, we just remind the other team that we never practice,” Vu said. “We all just show up and switch who goes in every five minutes.”
The Hoops League does not have a big following at CHS partly because much of the student body is not aware the team even exists. The players do not expect to have bleachers full of fans at games, but appreciate any support they can get from family, friends, and those who just enjoy watching the game.
“I have started coming to the games to support a couple guys I know on the team,” senior Kaitlin VanRiper said. “It is fun to watch them play because you can tell they do not take it too seriously. It is all in good fun.”
The Hoops League may not be as serious in technique and skill as the teams they play every Tuesday night in the small gym, but their spirit and love for the game is apparent.
“I just want the guys on the team to have fun,” Osiecki said. “We all love to play the game and that’s what it is all is about.”
