Tomorrow, members of the Coppell High School TOMS club, as well as other CHS students, will walk the school barefoot. This movement is all in efforts to promote the main idea behind the TOMS organization – the fact that there are people in the world who are blessed enough to be able to afford shoes.
While having shoes to cover our feet is something that is often not thought twice about at CHS, there are several areas of the world where lack of proper shoes causes diseases in the feet and can ulitimately be fatal. This “no shoes” day is to raise awareness for what it’s like to go one day without something to protect feet.
“Going barefoot for the day is just a small sacrifice that we can make to bring attention to those that don’t get to choose whether they wear shoes or not,” TOMS club co-sponsor Sarah Hillier said.
While it is understood that there are certain areas of the school where it might be difficult to go barefoot – say, inside the bathrooms and the commons – students are still encouraged to remain barefoot throughout the rest of the day. One day without these basic necessities will raise awareness of the perils that many people have to go through every day, without a choice.
