April Fools’ Day took on a new meaning to the media this week when the Texas Motor Speedway and radio station KSCS 96.3 teamed up to play a prank on all of Texas.
Texas Motor Speedway officials sent out a message that they had paid Radio DJ Terry Dorsey to legally change his name to TexasMotorSpeedway.com. The radio station, KSCS 96.3-FM, went along with the joke, and several media outlets spread the news, believing it to be true.
They were, however, in for a joke, and found out the hard way, when both entities declared the prank on television. Though Dorsey and the TMS took the joke lightly, much of the media did not, seeing it as an offense to their purpose of spreading the news and the truth.
