Nearly 500,000 followers on Twitter. Eighteen million likes on Facebook. Almost six million followers on Instagram. A No.1 New York Times best-selling book. And thousands of inspiring stories shared of people from New York City and countries across the world.

Now the creator of Humans of New York, Brandon Stanton, will be sharing his own story.

Tonight, the University of North Texas in Denton is hosting ‘Humans of New York: An Evening with Brandon Stanton’ at the UNT Coliseum from 7-9 p.m.

The event will bring together UNT staff, students and guests to discuss Stanton’s photojournalistic work and experience chronicling the lives and stories of people, from veterans and homeless artists in New York City to national figures like Hillary Clinton.

“Stanton is just so real,” Anjum George, a resident of Coppell who is attending the event on Wednesday, said. “The stories he covers are so raw and shows the human side of people that he talks to. I’m also fascinated by how he has made a huge impact on starting charitable organizations just by his portrayal of these people, using social media.”

For the millions of people who scroll through their social media feeds each day, Humans of New York has also become a way to intimately connect with the stories of people that they have never met.

“Sometimes the media doesn’t show people’s human sides because it is so political,” George said. “But I find [Stanton] inspiring because I can see his pictures and read a story about a person instead of a statistic, whether it’s a refugee crisis, a person in prison, or someone who is a drug addict, and that brings some humanity to those stories. I just can’t wait to see him to get more inspiration.”
