Jamie Kimbrell, Staff Writer

The lights dim, and the unmistakeable scent of buttery popcorn fills the air around you. You look over and see your friends, family or date in the dark haze of the theater.

You feel each flash of the big screen and suddenly are sucked into an alternate universe, quickly engrossed in the characters of the movie.

The movie keeps you guessing, takes turns and builds the plot that creates the masterpiece you just spent the last two hours viewing. No matter what genre you prefer, you probably attended a movie in 2015 and had a similar experience.

Last year was a great year in the film industry, films across the world making $8.3 billion from box office sales. As well, the industry produced many great films such as the much anticipated Mockingjay: Part 2, of the Hunger Games trilogy, Insurgent of the Divergent trilogy and The Scorch Trials of the Maze Runner series. Other animated productions such as Disney Pixar’s Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur and the yellow chaos that overtook the media with “Minions” all came out in 2015.

We cannot skip Marvel’s top grossing productions The Avengers: Age of Ultron & Ant Man. The industry boomed and box office sales soared as Fast and Furious 7 concluded the collection with a tribute to the late Paul Walker. However, no movie surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens that premiered over Christmas break.

It seemed in 2015 all genres ranging from horror to Marvel action movies were successful in creating new favorites for people across the globe. However, let the excitement begin as the projected 2016 movie line up has been established and so far, looks to be even better than 2015. So without further ado, here are a few of the anticipated films of the year.

For all those who love superheroes and are lovers of the Marvel corporation, we have a first look at the movies for 2016. Marvel only has two movies scheduled to premier this year, yet both are set to be big hits. On May 6, Captain America: Civil War, the third addition to the series will be released into theaters. On Nov. 4, Marvel will release the stand-alone film Doctor Strange. Although it is not Marvel, on Mar. 25, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, based on the DC comic characters, will come to theaters. On Feb. 12, Deadpool debuts as a thrilling, antihero movie starring American actor Ryan Reynolds. Deadpool is projected to earn $55 million on opening night, making it the most anticipated movie of February 2016.
