For many the sequel to a movie is never quite as good, the second album doesn’t meet expectations and the second to anything never seems to outshine the very first time. But for me, the second time I saw The Colourist in concert, it seemed to defy the old rule.

The first time I saw The Colourist was at the Chipotle Cultivate Festival in October. I had just began to listen to the band and after seeing them live, it felt hard to top.

Last Friday, the band came to Club Dada in Dallas, for an all-ages event. I came with two of my friends and arrived two hours early in order to get the best spots. After waiting in line, we were brought into the fairly small club and waited for the band to come out.

The first song the band played was “Yes Yes,” an upbeat and fast-moving song. To put it mildly, I was very impressed. The band has an amazing chemistry and its drummer, Maya Tuttle, is especially talented.

Throughout the set, the crowd became very involved. Song after song, the crowd continued to sing along and chant for more. The band seemed very happy to have gotten such a following and the main singer, Adam Castilla went so far as to move the microphone into the crowd where my friends and I were able to sing along although only for three to four seconds.

After hearing a multitude of songs from the band’s album, The Colourist, we were given a preview of its new songs. I am very excited to hear the new music, once their new album is released.

After the concert, the band came out by its merchandise table to meet the fans. My friends and I came up to buy posters and were able to meet the members of the band. To put it honestly, they were adorably awkward.

Two of the members recognized us as the lively fans at the very front and the guitarist Kollin Johannsen proceeded to give us all high fives. We then asked to take group photos and the funny shots we took were a testament to how unique The Colourist is. Both of the guitarists hid behind us and had many awkward poses available for our photos. Tuttle and Castilla were very sweet and it was amazing to meet a band whose music I loved so much.

After meeting the band and experiencing two amazing shows by them, I cannot wait to see where The Colourist will end up.
