Alt-j paints beautiful picture with new album

The new alt-J album This Is All Yours has somewhat of a different vibe than their debut album An Awesome Wave; it is a brand new story all in itself.

The British art-rock/alternative band dances with traditional folk elements and takes your hand to go on another musical odyssey. With the beginning tracks (in order) being, “Intro”, “Arrival in Nara” and then “Nara”, you really feel like you are on a pilgrimage to a magical place called Nara.

It could not be an alt-J album without an intro to start the album and at least one interlude in between. This Is All Yours has the fitting title of “Garden of England” as the minute long interlude of wind instruments and birds chirping.

The album sounds like it should be playing in the background of the Mad Tea Party in Alice in Wonderland, and I love it.

The singles “Left Hand Free”, “Every Other Freckle” and “Hunger of the Pine” have all different sounds. “Left Hand Free” is more fast, upbeat and rocky and “Hunger of the Pine” is more suspenseful, it has synthesis of multiple instruments and noises. The repetition of a female singer saying, “I’m the female rebel”, this song would be perfect for a Hunger Games or Katniss montage.

The album ends with “Leaving Nara” and the story/journey is completed, until the next album that is.

Alt-J come to Dallas on Nov. 5 at Southside Ballroom on Lamar. And I got my ticket the minute they went on sale.
