For a team that has become know for its high powered offense over the years Coppell relied heavily on its defense in a 14-0 win over the Plano East Panthers. While their offense that averages near 40 points and over 400 yards a game struggled to produce for much of the day the defense maintined the lead by shuting out the panthers offense.
The defensive effort was led by interceptions by David Busby, Jake Wohlford and Teddy Johnson.
Coppell who led by 14 after three faced a breif scare in the fourth quarter as Plano east drove the field and looked poised to score. The cowboy offense was able to hold on the goaline thanks in part to two touchdown saving tackles by Teddy Johnson on second and third down.
As the cowboys look forward to round three where they will face a 10-2 Arlington team they will need to improve upon their offensive production in order to get the win. As the offense looks for answers to why they were only able to put up 14 points, their lowest winning total of the year, Cam McDaniel will need to get on track as he only ran for 56 yards against Plano East. the only time the offense put up a lower total was against Soutlake in their lone loss on the season.
Coppelll is scheduled to play their third round matchup at 1 p.m. Saturday at Birdville ISD Stadium.
