There were so many emotions going through the minds of the seven Coppell High School golfers when they claimed their first place title at the Regional Golf Tournament in Lubbock this past week.
On April 15-16, the girls varsity team traveled six hours to not only take home the gold as Class 5A Region I champions but also be the first ever group of players to advance to the state tournament which will be held in Austin on April 29-30.
“I keep thinking about how incredible it is that we made such an amazing accomplishment,” sophomore varsity golfer Chaithra Katamneni said. “I was both shocked and excited at the fact that we set a goal and were able to completely accomplish it.”
This is truly an amazing accomplishment for the CHS golf program. This group of girls is the first to make it to state out of any boys or girls teams in the history of the program. This group of players consists of seniors Tiffany Breitenwischer and Lexi Kearney, juniors Taylor Icenberger and Hannah Jiao, and sophomores Chaithra Katamneni, Sol Lee and Payton Cupstid.
The team shot a total of 605 over the course of two days, shooting a 305 on each day.
“The team did really well over all and we honestly could not have done it without our amazing coaches,” Katamneni said
Not only was the coach extremely proud of these seven amazing girls, but so were the other players in the golf program at CHS.
“As an entire golf team we are all very excited and proud of the girls for making it to the state tournament,” senior varsity golfer Daniel Dickens said. “The countless hours that they have put into their game shows, and for that they have certainly deserved making it to state.”
Not only are the girls going to the state tournament, but also they are currently ranked fourth in the state. During the Regional Golf Tournament in Lubbock, Katamneni, Icenberger, and Lee were named All Region 2nd team players.
“It was so unexpected and shocking,” sophomore varsity golfer Sol Lee said. “We have never gone to state before so it was an amazing goal to achieve.”
