The best thing about school is eating. Students eat constantly throughout the day. There is the mandatory lunch but the school store gives students a chance to get a snack in between classes. Some students are fortunate to take a class all about food.

Nutrition and Food Science is an elective class students can take either for one or two semesters. The basic purpose for the class is for students to learn food preparation principles.
“This is a great class for kids to learn about exactly what is in the food that they are eating and how they can eat healthier,” nutrition and food science teacher Becky Richards said.

The curriculum for the first nine weeks was the basics of learning about nutrition and what a person needs to eat. The class goes in depth on all the food nutrition groups, like carbohydrates, dairy and meat.  After that, the class goes into food preparation techniques like measurements, food terms and vocabulary.

“I took this class to learn life skills that I will need later on in life like in college when I am on my own,” senior Sarah Thomas said.

Once all of the academics of the class have been taught, the fun begins. Since the first week of November, the students cooked in class. They started off with traditional chocolate chip cookies to learn about basic measurements and how to read a recipe.

“[Nutrition and Food Science] was such a helpful class,” former student and senior Shelby Crow said. “To this day, I use the knowledge I learned from that class all the time at home.”

Now for each week, the class will go over a different type of food for the students to learn. The week of Nov. 9 is dairy, mainly eggs, so the class will be making breakfast burritos. These lessons will teach students what they should eat and will keep them in better shape.

“Obesity is a big issue in America today and I hope this class can help people to be healthy,” Richards said.
