Building on the success of last week’s run performance; the Coppell Cowboys once again broke the 200 yard rushing mark in their 40-3 win against the Rockwall Yellow Jackets yesterday.
After a slow start last week the Coppell offense was ready to make a statement early.
“Well we came out pretty slow last week, only put up one touchdown in the first half, and that really just lit our fire this week,” Coppell junior running back Gavin McDaniel said. “We wanted to come out this week and really change that and do our best to dominate.”
Leading the charge of this resurgent offense were McDaniel and senior running back Luke Jenner who combined for over half of the team’s rushing yards with 116 yards out of the 204 total rushing yards. McDaniel led the team in yards with 11 caries for 70 yards while Jenner had nine carries for 46 yards.
McDaniel electrified the Coppell crowd early with a 42-yard touchdown burst.
“He has so much speed and quickness, he can play any position, he is an all-around player, and he is just an athlete,” Jenner said.
Jenner added a three yard push for a score in the first half of the game Friday night.
The Coppell offense line seemed to fix its problems from last week’s game and contribute to the monster offensive night Coppell created. The line did not once botch a snap the entire game which helped McDaniel and Jenner run all over the Rockwall defense.
“The offensive line did everything,” McDaniel said.
The Coppell run offense stung the Yellow Jackets who have had inconsistent play from their run defense so far this year.
They have shown signs of brilliance but falter at other points of their game. Rockwall has forced five fumbles already in the year but has allowed 239.5 rushing yards per game.
Coppell made them pay.
In four of the first five series for Coppell, the Cowboys scored, it seemed, from all over the field. It did not matter who had the ball or what the play call was.
McDaniel and the offense would not be denied. The score quickly became 28-3 in Coppell’s favor before the first half was even over.
In the second half of the game, the offense slowed down but did not stop the attack. Coppell senior quarterback Colby Mahon added another touchdown pass to bring his night’s total to three, with a 19-yard strike to Jenner.
Mahon’s other touchdown passes were to senior wide receiver Cameron Smith, one for a 15-yard score and the other a 42-yard bullet pass.
Coppell junior running back Boris Mulume aslo contributed on the ground with 12 carries for 42 yards.
If the rest of the season is played out like tonight’s game, Jenner, McDaniel, and the Coppell offense will face no threat they cannot handle.
