Right now the administrators are hard at work trying to make much needed changes to the class selection for next year – however, some changes are less wanted than others.
Among the class cuts for next year, CHS’s Latin program will be cut along with a few other language electives. Current Latin students will be offered a Rosetta Stone alternative so they can get the language credits they need, but Latin will not be offered to any more students.
Even though it is a language that is no longer spoken, Latin does have a very active role as the basis for many languages today, and poses many practical advantages. Learning Latin allows students to find the roots of several languages and strengthens their vocabulary. Even in a non medical setting, Latin is used a lot more than you think – in school and state mottoes, in great sayings and the meaning of many English words can be derived from Latin.
It is proven that students who take Latin have a better score on the vocabulary of their SAT and other tests. Latin is an incredibly practical thing to take, and should not be completely removed from the course selection. Perhaps the school could hire a part time teacher to teach the classes that do have Latin, not just ignore the few that do want to learn.
