The Sidekick staff honored by Dallas Morning News

The 21st annual Dallas Morning News High School Journalism Day was held at SMU on Wednesday where The Sidekick staff took home the 'Best Newspaper' award. Photo by Irma Kennedy.

At the 21st annual Dallas Morning News High School Journalism Day on Wednesday, The Sidekick was named ‘Best Newspaper’ of the 2011-2012 school year. In addition to the publication awards, 10 Sidekick staff members and two KCBY members were nominated for individual accolades in seven different categories.

This years individual winners were sophomore Staff Photographer Trevor Stiff in the Sports Photo category, junior News Editor Julianne Cauley for Sports Reporting and senior Photo Editor Brian Hwu in the category of Cartoon/Illustration Portfolio.

This win was the second year in a row The Sidekick has won ‘Best Newspaper.’

In addition to the individual winners, staff writers junior Thomas Hair and senior Kara Adkins were nominated in News Reporting, junior Sports Editor Sammy Robben was nominated in Sports Reporting, junior Jordan Thompson was nominated in Short Feature, sophomore staff writer Lance McCaskey was nominated in Sports Feature, and senior Features Editor Mary Whitfill, senior Opinions Editor Kelly Stewart and KCBY juniors Hayley Struck and Josh Brunelli were nominated in Video.
