Anyone that has grown up in Coppell is familiar with Kid Country, the colossal, wooden
playground off of Parkway.
Built in 1992, the playground has stood strong over time, however, many people agree that it is time for
an update. That’s where the Kid Country 2012 Project comes in. The city, in partnership with Robert S. Leathers and Associates, the firm responsible for the original playground, has released new information about the project including a floor plan and volunteer opportunities. There is no doubt that Robert S. Leathers has the necessary experience, as the firm is responsible for 2500 playgrounds around the metroplex and even some worldwide.
Originally estimated to have a 15-year lifespan, the park has exceeded predictions by four years. According to the project website, City officials believe that renovating the existing park will continue to keep Coppell a close-knit community and encourage activity. The park will continue to be handicap accessible, and follow all regulations listed in the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Demolition of the existing park is predicted to begin on April 2. An estimated 3,000 volunteers will be needed in the construction, giving many community members an opportunity to improve something close to their heart. Other than physical work, the city accepts donations and is selling t-shirts and caps to raise funds. Assuming everything goes on schedule, the park will be complete and ready for action by April 22.
